Leader--Joseph Weiss, MD
Interpersonal Relational
Theory (sometimes referred to as Control-Mastery Theory) is based on Dr.
Weiss’s “control hypothesis.” Control hypothesis asserts that
individuals in therapy strongly desire to improve, and will bring forth
unconscious mental contents (impulses, memories, ideas, etc.) when they
unconsciously decide that they can safely do so. Thus, the work of the
therapy centers around creating an atmosphere of security in which the
individual can overcome anxiety regarding unconscious mental contents and
bring them forth.
The first empirical work
supporting Dr. Weiss’s control hypothesis was published in 1972; the San
Francisco Psychotherapy Research Group (formerly the Mt. Zion Psychotherapy
Research Group) continues to conduct and publish empirical research based on
the control hypothesis. Currently, the Group consists of over 100
researchers and clinicians who have published over 100 papers in the last
ten years
