The DSPP Arts
Committee is planning a special evening on Saturday, November 6, from six to nine p.m.
Noted Dallas artist and professor, Bill Komodore, has invited us to his home studio for a
tour. Mr. Komodore will begin this relaxed and casual evening by talking with us
about his paintings and drawings and by showing us examples of his work. A Full
Professor of Art at S.M.U since 1989, Mr. Komodore enjoys talking about the psychology of
art in general, as well as his thoughts about his own creative process. He
looks forward to discussing art with us and, in particular, his own art work. |
Mr.
Komodores work is found in the permanent collections of the Dallas Museum of Art,
the Whitney Museum of American Art, the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., the
Hamilton Gallery in Ontario, Canada, the Milwaukee Museum of Art, the Walker Art Center in
Minneapolis, the Barrett and Hanley private collections in Dallas, and the Edmund
Pillsbury collection in Fort Worth, among others. He has had solo exhibitions at the
Meadows Museum at S.M.U., at Brookhaven College, at the Dallas Visual Art Center, and at
the Gene Binder Gallery in Dallas. In addition, Mr. Komodore has had solo
exhibitions at the Howard Wise Gallery in New York City, at the Jansen-Perez Gallery in
San Antonio, at Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, Virginia, and at the South
Texas Institute for the Arts in Corpus Christi. He has also contributed to dozens of
group shows including one at the Museum of Modern Art in New York, three shows at the
Whitney Museum in New York, and several in Dallas and elsewhere in Texas. Mr.
Komodore was awarded first prize by the Whitney Museum Director David Ross at a group show
of Texas Art, held at the the Cullen Center in Houston, for his painting, "General
Custers Soul Unable to Recognize His Body", in 1997. He also received
the 1997 Legends Award by the Dallas Visual Arts Center.
Mr. Komodore is currently
doing a study of nineteenth century pottery of the south, specializing in the pottery of
Texas. In a 1997 interview by John Lunsford, director of the Meadows Museum at
S.M.U., Mr. Komodore discussed his interest in vessels, in mythological and classical
themes, in the language and materials of drawing and painting, as aspects of his
explorations as a creative artist. He also observed the autobiographical aspects of
his ongoing use of the theme of Man and Woman as his art has developed over the
years, evolving from alienation to more recent themes of intimacy and merger. Mr.
Lunsford commented, "Since much of your art is concerned with universals, with what
must be called profound matters, it may come as a surprise to some that there is also a
strong element of humor to be found in certain works". Mr. Komodore replied,
"Sometimes humor is all there is and the absurd takes over
Sometimes I think I
will never stop laughing
