JANUARY 14, 2001

Salomon
Grimberg, M.D
Jacques and Natasha Gelman Collection
Lecture and Tour of the Gelman Show and Gerzso Exhibition
On January 14 at 12:30
p.m., Salomon Grimberg, M.D. will present a lecture, sponsored by the DSPP
ARTS Committee, at the D.M.A.'s Horchow Auditorium on the Jacques and
Natasha Gelman Collection currently on view at the Museum. The talk will
be followed by a tour of the Gelman show and of the Gerzso exhibition
currently in the Tower Gallery of the DMA.
Dr. Grimberg, well-known
psychiatrist and art curator/critic/broker, is member of DSPP and of the
Arts Committee, as well as a past presenter at DSPP. His January talk
addresses the Gelmans as collectors of Modern Mexican painting, and the
works they acquired mostly from the artists themselves with whom they were
friendly. The strength of the collection lies in works by Frida Kahlo,
represented by 11 works, and Gunther Gerzso, by 40. Each of these groups
of outstanding paintings forms a collection in itself.
Other painters whose works
are on view are Orozco, Romero, Tamayo and Diego Rivera. Not all of the
collections' works are on view, only some of the highlights, those that
are most popular. Grimberg, who curated the current Gerzso show and the
past Kahlo exhibition at The Meadows Museum will speak primarily about
these two painters.
Dr. Grimberg has offered
ample opportunity in the course of the gallery walk/talk following his
lecture in the auditorium to chat with him informally.
This event is sponsored by
the DSPP Arts Committee and is open to all DSPP members and their guests.
It is also open to non-DSPP members who are interested in art from a
psychoanalytic perspective. Contact Judith Samson, Ph.D. at the number
listed below if you have any questions.
