DSPP and the Arts

Pictures from the 4th Annual Soiree

The DSPP Arts Committee was created in 1996 by Judith Samson, Ph.D.  The idea emerged while she was serving on the Community Relations Committee.  Her intent was to engage interested DSPP members in a variety of artistic activities and explore the psychological/psychoanalytic underpinnings.  The artistic spheres have included cinematic, performance, literary and studio arts, and participation has always provided a rich environment for fun, connection and discussion.

Over the course of time, the DSPP Arts Committee has joined with other local analytic organizations to expand attendance and provide a more diverse source of knowledge, input, and interpretation of the psychological/psychoanalytic meaning of the arts and artists.  Some of the activities are coordinated with galleries, museums, theaters, and universities.  Others are small and more intimate and held in individual members’ homes.  In order to continue expanding the larger activities with other analytic and artistic groups, funding for these events must also expand.

Movie Night at the Nelson’s: “Valentin”

VALENTÍN is a coming of age story told through the eyes of a precocious 10-year old boy who lives with his grandmother in turbulent 1969 Argentina. Estranged from his eccentric parents, young Valentín yearns for a real family and dreams about becoming an astronaut. He befriends a recluse neighbor, forms an unlikely friendship with one of his father’s many ex-girlfriends and sets out to discover the harsh realities about his parents, all the while bringing joy and wisdom into the lives of adults around him. Scott and Sarah Nelson will host this event, and an invitation will be sent to all DSPP members.

Artist Bob Stuth-Wade: “Born by Water”

Valley House Gallery, owned by Kevin Vogel
Kevin Vogel will host an evening that includes viewing the art work in his gallery as well as guiding us through his luxurious property that includes his home and walking paths on a tranquil sculptured landscape.

Bob Stuth-Wade is a Texas artist who has painted consistently since his teenage years. He has had several exhibitions at the Valley House Gallery and Kevin Vogel stated the following about his painting. “What Bob paints is much greater than the obvious subject of landscape, still life, or figure. His subjects convey a special indefinable psychological element most easily described as soul.”

4th annual Soiree

The DSPP soiree has now become an anticipated annual tradition. Many members of DSPP, as well as their spouses and friends, have skills and passion of an artistic nature, and have become fond of sharing that aspect of themselves with others. This event is open to all of the various psychoanalytic organizations in the area, including DSPSW, the Dallas Psychoanalytic Foundation, and the Dallas Psychoanalytic Center. All are invited to join us for this fun and exhilarating event, whether as a “performer” or as an “audience” member who wants to experience the energy. Past performers include singers, jazz musicians, classical musicians, poets, readers, singers, and experts in Tai Chi. Time and location to be announced later.

Lynn Gamwell, Ph.D. : “Freud Antiquities: Fragments from a Buried Past”

Co-sponsored with the Dallas Foundation for Psychoanalysis, the Dallas Psychoanalytic Center, University of Texas at Dallas, and UT Southwestern

Lynn Gamwell has a Ph.D. in Art History from UCLA, and directs the Art Museum of the State University of New York at Binghamton. She curated the Gallery of Art and Science of the New York Academy of Science for a decade. She has also curated the following exhibitions, for which she edited and was an author of the exhibition catalogues: “Sigmund Freud and Art: His Personal Collection of Antiquities” (Abrams, 1989); “Madness in America: Cultural and Medical Perceptions of Mental Illness before 1914” (Cornell, 1994); and “Dreams 1900-2000: Science, Art, and the Unconscious Mind” (Cornell, 2000). Her curated exhibitions have traveled to over thirty museums, including the Jewish Museum in New York, the National Museum of American Art in Washington, DC, and the Historisches Museum der Stadt in Vienna, Austria.

The focus of Dr. Gamwell’s talk will be Freud’s art collection and the analogy he made between psychoanalysis and archeology – both reconstructions of the past from buried fragments. She will also include a small section of the talk on Freud’s Jewish heritage as it relates to his collection. The event will be held at the SMU Meadows Museum from 2-4 p.m.

April 26, 2008
Cindy McTee, Ph.D. : Musical Composer

Hailed by critics as a composer whose music reflects a "charging, churning celebration of the musical and cultural energy of modern-day America," Cindy McTee “brings to the world of concert music a fresh and imaginative voice.”

Dr. McTee is the Regents Professor of Music Composition at the University of North Texas, and will talk about her creative process, why she writes music, and what if feels like to compose. Factors that have shaped her personal aesthetic will be explored, including early musical training, perfectionism, the need for approval, and gender bias. Audio examples of her music will be provided to support the discussion.

More information is available on her website at www.cindymctee.com.

The DSPP Arts Committee, currently chaired by Denise Humphrey, Ph.D., is initiating an opportunity for members to make a financial contribution to this group.  Contributions and amount are completely optional.  If you decide to make a donation, you will be provided with a tax-deduction statement.  Financial contributions may be included with your DSPP membership fee for the year; however, for simplicity, please include a separate check.

 Thank you for your consideration.
