DSPP ARTS COMMITTEE
The DSPP Arts Committee was created in 1996 by Judith Samson, Ph.D. The idea emerged while she was serving on the Community Relations Committee. Her intent was to engage interested DSPP members in a variety of artistic activities and explore the psychological/psychoanalytic underpinnings. The artistic spheres have included cinematic, performance, literary and studio arts, and participation has always provided a rich environment for fun, connection, and discussion. The Arts Committee is devoted to enriching life experience through increasing the appreciation, interpretation, and comprehension of artistic personalities and the meaning of their creative expression from a psychoanalytic perspective. As Pablo Picasso stated, “The artist is a receptacle for emotions that come from all over the place…from the sky, from the earth, from a scrap of paper, from a spider’s web.” Art stirs internal responses and evokes questions that arouse a desire in us to understand those feelings and questions. What is an artist trying to express? What needs of the artist are being met through creative expression? Is art, without the limitation of words, a truer expression of human feelings? Does expression assuage emotional response or resonance in the viewers or audience? Is art a truer expression of human capacities and desire without the impediments of intellectualizations that can betray the heart? The 2008-2009 DSPP Arts program will enhance our lives and our life stories, and nurture our aesthetic experiences. The beauty of art reaches deeply into the human heart and mind, and takes on an importance in human and professional development. Hence, DSPP is committed to providing artistic experiences to members, colleagues, and friends.

DSPP ARTS EVENTS 2009-2010
Plans are underway to organize some interesting and fun events for 2009-2010. Details with dates, times, and venues will be coming later as plans are finalized. Our events this year will as always focus on the arts and the creativity of artists, as well as the use of the arts as a means of expression and communication. In addition, we will also touch upon artistic technique, as the theme for this year’s DSPP programs is psychotherapeutic technique. More information will be sent out about:
Dr. Adriana Cobo-Frenkel is a native of Chile and has lived in the USA since 1959, after receiving
a graduate degree in Biochemistry from the University of Chile. Today she is a professor of Biology at Richland College in Dallas, Texas. Since the 1970's she has studied art in Dallas at UTD and Brookhaven College and in Pietrasanta, Italy since 1987, where she has traveled almost every summer to learn about carving marble and to obtain marble to continue carving at her studio in Dallas.
Her art is an expression of her training in the sciences. She obtains her inspiration in the organic and abstract shapes of nature. She has chosen marble as a medium, a very challenging, nonetheless very rewarding material. Many ideas are created in drawings or in clay.
Giving life, movement and rhythm to a rough and cold piece of marble has become her greatest challenge. Her presentation will be a slide show at a Home Studio.
Ricardo Ainslie, Ph.D, a psychologist who teaches at the University of Texas in Austin, will be presenting his latest documentary film, YBasta!. During a visit to his native Mexico City in 2004, Dr. Ainslie learned of the “horror stories from friends and family about the chaos, fear and explosion of kidnappings.” He went on to say, “Everyone knew of someone who had been kidnapped in the previous 10 years.” In true Ainslie fashion he interviewed kidnapping victims, family members, Mexican journalists and academics, members of the Mexican equivalent of the FBI, state police, and a kidnapper. This event will be co-sponsored with the Dallas Psychoanalytic Center and DSPSW, and will be held at the MAC Theater on Saturday, November 7th at 6 p.m. To view an article on the documentary, visit http://www.utexas.edu/features/2009/06/01/ya_basta
Matt Fajkus, architect, will participate with a tour/lecture of the new Opera House in Dallas, to help us explore the function of accommodating the specific needs of this building’s function and esthetic aspects of the design. Attention will be given to the psychological effects of the building on the audience and the techniques used to achieve them. The Winspear tour will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 9, 2010, and will be followed by a lecture at the Dallas Center for Architecture, which is quite near the Winspear.
Movie Night will be held at Erin Hammond’s house this year. Viewing will be on her 10 foot diagonal projector screen (Wow!) and we will be watching/discussing an episode from the TV series In Treatment. Here’s where we get to be armchair, Monday morning coaches/therapists, as we turn our eyes and ears to the techniques used by the TV therapist and supervisor.
The ever popular, not-to-be-missed 6th Annual Soiree has now become an anticipated annual tradition. Many of our members, friends, spouses, and colleagues have skills and passions of an artistic nature, and have become fond of sharing that aspect of themselves with others. This event is open to all of the psychological associations in our area to experience this fun, energetic and exhilarating event, whether as “performer” or an “audience” member. This event is held at the home of Denise Humphrey, Ph.D on SaturdayFebruary 27, 2010.
DSPP arts events are free, fun, and open to the public! Bring spouses (limit one per person) and friends (no limit). In some cases, and especially when meeting in a member’s home, reservations are required due to space limitations. Otherwise, the more the merrier! You can help by getting the word out.
