ARTS Committee invites you to our last Arts event of 2002-2003. On Saturday
evening May 10, Christie's Gallery owner, Ms. Joy Christie and her husband,
Dr. Gerry Birdwell, will present a program, Understanding and Collecting
African Tribal Art, at the home of Sandra Pitts and Steven Seidenfeld.
Having researched and collected important
African art works for many years from renowned world collections, museums
and direct sources in Africa, Ms. Christie and Dr. Birdwell are recognized
as informed collectors of tribal African art, and they love to educate those
curious about African art collecting. Their ambitious program for the
evening will present the arts of Africa from a combined
art-historical-psychological perspective.
The program will begin with an historical
exploration of the evolving basis for collecting African art, its position
as adjunct to and influence on Western art with special appeal to certain
Western artists and to psychoanalysts, its political and moral functions,
and the diverse aesthetics illustrated by African
sculptors from various tribes such as Fang and
Songye. The program will move to an exploration of strategies for becoming
informed and for collecting African art, including estimating the future
value of various categories of tribal art. Accompanying and illustrating the
Christie-Birdwell presentation will be a selection of African artifacts
from the speakers' personal collection. Opportunity for questions, answers,
and discussion will follow the talk.
There will be a brief cocktail hour at 6:30,
followed by the program at 7:00 sharp! A cocktail-buffet supper will follow
the program. Reservations for this program are required and must be
received by Saturday, May 3, as space is limited and May 3 is the
deadline for the caterer. There is no charge for this event (FREE!!!)
For reservations, please contact Judith
